F02 Guidance: Long-term planning and how to split units

LONG TERM PLANNING AND HOW TO SPLIT UNITS:

EXISTING UNITS IN 6 WEEK BLOCKS TO FIT WITH OTHER SUBJECTS

Rationale

Since Awareness Mystery and Value was updated in 2011 many primary schools are now planning in 6 week blocks. Carrying one long unit over two terms can result in a lag in learning and therefore sharper shorter units may increase engagement and progress.

By dividing each of the old AMV units into two more manageable tighter units, the pace and focus of learning may well improve.

Assessment

It is suggested that in order to keep summative assessment manageable, that pupils’ work is still only assessed formally and recorded three times a year – after two of these new shorter units.
